This last week was full of highs, like highs on highs. It started with Friday night’s Local Author event at the downtown Central Library in San Diego. I will take any excuse to visit this premium location, any time, but this event was extra special since it was my first time there as the author of my very own book! I had attended as the editor of the Sea of Cortez Review way back when, at the old Central Library. I saw old friends and was very proud to have edited a few books in the annual display, including Richard Carrico’s chilling true crime book, Monsters on the Loose, Judy Reeve’s memoir When Your Heart Says Go, and R.D. Kardon’s Flying Home, the last book in her excellent Flygirl series. Happy editor!
The next day was my California launch party hosted by La Playa Books at the Point Loma Wine Pub. So many friends attended, and a few strangers who are now friends. I talked, we laughed, sipped, and nibbled, and the hours passed in an emotional daze. The house was full, as was my heart.
This picture with me and the Sunbelt crew (also three of my writer’s group) shows just how dazed I was. I somehow ended up with very few photos of the venue itself, but it was lovely. A perfect sunny San Diego day in our old Point Loma neighborhood, and so much love and support from so many people I love and admire.
We got to visit the Sheas (Joe and Teresa, Emma and Beth) up in Poway on Sunday and the day was glorious if a bit hotter than we are used to. Every visit with my bro and sis and my nieces is a good day. And there was chocolate pie for Russel to top it all off. The rest of the week was full of rainy days, which was a fun change, and we’ve enjoyed some wet walks and good meals and even caught up on Netflix movies. I highly recommend the film Rustin (I hardly recognized Colman Domingo after seeing him in Color Purple—he’s astounding!) and I just loved the whole cast of Nyad.
I attended my first Substack writers Meetup on Wednesday, organized by Lindsey Salatka of one of my favorite Substack newsletters, It’s a Thing. We sipped bubbly and chatted with new and old friends (yes, again!) and it was well worth the long drive back out to Bonita in the dark and windy night.
Tonight will be another “full circle” event for me, at San Diego Writers, Ink, in the Inspirations Gallery. I’ll be reading in the Inspirations Gallery followed by a Q&A and book signing, and then there’s an open house and I get to see the art show by Zoe (Zohreh) Ghahremani, the multi-talented author of the brilliant Sky of Red Poppies. This is all part of Liberty Station’s ongoing monthly First Friday art and food fest, which is always a good time in a great setting.
This photo is not of the new show, but it is the photo I could find, but it will give you a vague idea. I will be teaching at SDWI soon too, on Saturday the 10th from 1-3pm.
And there are two yacht club talks coming up, the first being a slideshow and talk with Russel at Oceanside YC tomorrow at 4, after my Zoom presentation to the International Memoir Writers group. The fun and festivities go on…More soon from the big book tour. Now I am off to get ready for a big day that will culminate in tonight’s SDWI event. The rain has stopped, too!
hasta pronto!
So glad I get to share in the San Diego adventures. See you at the next one!
Great going Jennifer! High fives all around! Continue enjoying your CA unveiling of Honeymoon at Sea!
